The Federal Government has issued a strong warning to electricity Distribution Companies about the inadequate power supply across the country. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, expressed his concerns on March 6, stating that if the current challenges persist, the government will consider revoking the licenses of these companies.
Adelabu summoned the Chief Executives of major Distribution Companies to a crucial meeting to address the worsening power supply situation in their respective regions and to find lasting solutions together. While the Generating Companies have made progress in increasing generation to over 4000MW, certain Distribution Companies are failing to efficiently distribute the power supplied by TCN, and vandalism of power infrastructure is making matters worse in areas like Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
The Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to holding Distribution Companies accountable for their performance, warning that license revocation could be a consequence of willful non-performance. Additionally, he instructed TCN to prioritize repairing damaged transmission towers and power lines to improve supply in affected regions.
Plans are also underway to settle outstanding debts owed to power generation and gas supply companies to alleviate financial strain and boost generation levels nationwide. Adelabu urged electricity consumers to be patient as the government works diligently to address these issues and provide better service to all Nigerians.
