President Joe Biden has expressed optimism that a temporary cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is on the horizon as negotiators strive to finalize a potential agreement. While in New York on Monday, Biden mentioned to reporters that a cease-fire could be established as early as next week.
The tensions between Israel and Hamas escalated in October after Hamas carried out large-scale terrorist attacks, resulting in over 1,000 deaths and the abduction of 200 individuals. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 29,000 due to ongoing Israeli attacks since then.
Both sides are currently engaged in discussions to reach a cease-fire that would halt the conflict in Gaza for six weeks and ensure the safe return of the remaining Israeli hostages. Israel Defense Forces, as well as Israeli Mossad and Shin Bet spy agencies, met with Egyptian and Qatari mediators in Doha on Monday. Representatives from Hamas also engaged in discussions with mediators, indicating progress in negotiations.
Earlier this month, Israel rejected a counter-offer from Hamas for a four-and-a-half-month cease-fire, deeming it unrealistic following talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The Biden Administration is intensifying its efforts to secure a cease-fire this month ahead of Ramadan commencement in two weeks.
Anticipated talks will continue on Tuesday as both sides work towards resolving the conflict.
